Re: How do I set the Maximum Grade?

by Steve Ambrosini (Using Moodle 2.3).

Well, there is nothing in your suggestion that I did not already know but I am still mystified on this idea of setting ther Maximum Grade. I can go to a page titled "Edit categories and items: full view" and see that the numbers in the "Max Grade" so incredibly do not reperesent the max grades that they should be.

In five years of dicing around with this I have never had course total or category totals showing anything meaningful.

In User Report, I see range as showing the correct numbers. The grade and percentage columns also show the correct numbers. I have an activity that is geared to a scale that can represent up to 189 points. The range in the user report shows 0 - 189 and a grade of 189 points is 100%.

In "Edit Categories and items: Full view" max grade is 12.  Where did THAT come from?
My category total for 8 assignments that should total 1726 is called out as 96. (8x12)
Now crazy is that? It is 12 no matter what scale is choosen.

In a screen called "Grade Item" I see 12 for maximum grade there is that  ubiquitous blue question mark for Maximum Grade and when I click on that  it says "This setting determines the maximum grade when using the value grade type" and "The maximum grade for an acticity-based grade item is set on the Activity settngs page."

What is the "value grade type"?
Where can the maximum grade be set on this alleged "Activities Settings Page"?

I type in "Activities Setting Page" in the search option in this web site and I only see my own question posted a day or two ago.  It seems that those three words have never used in this web site before.

I go around in circles trying to figure this out every year and then totally give up even trying.  I have to tell the students to ignore those numbers that make absolutely no intelligible sense.  I am sure you can see that I am really getting tired of this...

The strange thing is that I swear that I ahve seen an editable text box for Maximum grade somwhere but the "help" screens cannot seem to let me know. Neither does intuition.
