The multiplicator is just that, a very simple factor applied to non-manual grade items once the grade is in. Starts out as '1' (no manipulation) and can be set to anything, including decimals or negative numbers.
You can use the multiplicator to take any maximum value (source) and make it any other maximum value (target) that better fits your intentions. Simply take the target value and divide it by the source value.
You don't mention your version but if you're on 2.x you can remove the percentage (or any other) column from the student User grade report through the Settings tab/ drop down.
