To "limit the submissions" I used to tell my students that since the purpose of coming to school was to learn, they were just going to have to learn how to use the Submit button, and meet deadlines. If an assignment was not submitted, I would not grade it. If it was submitted late, I would automatically deduct x number of points. I always set a cutoff date and then used the Assignment Countdown Timer template in the Generico filter so they couldn't say they didn't know it was due.
There were always a few incidents at the start of the year, but very seldom after our first nine week grading period.
Been a lot of refinement (anybody can do it) happening on this particular filter over the past couple of weeks to allow for customizing the title, message, font, font size and colors. A really nice feature is the countdown timer can be placed in multiple places and made into a URL link that when clicked takes you right to the assignment.
Note: This picture actually shows two Generico filters. The countdown plus, in read in yellow a span format filter that also includes the username, so the warning is customized to the particular user looking at it.
