guess the problem here is in the emoticongraphy of the medium. I only said that "it sounds rude if not arrogant". Maybe I could have said that"It can come across as rude..." instead.

did not ask the question as some have implied and it looks as if the original post and my response are being confused.
The point in my post was that just saying "No" does not advance the interest of the inquiry and it
kills the development to an answer. My
students get negative marks for one word comments because they have not offered some
justification or contribution to the conversation. On an exam, just "Yes" or "No" nets no credit even if the answer is correct.
In my stead, it appears as if this situation has mostly worked itself out.
