To some extent it must be related to the code - the code is what is used to manipulate the data, so the data doesn't do anything that the code doesn't tell it to do.
Obviously, in this case, there is some combination of the code with your data which is causing a problem (but it is still possible that this is an issue that has already affected others and has been fixed in later versions of Moodle).
Have you tried turning on debugging ( http://docs.moodle.org/en/Debugging ) and seeing if there are any error messages?
